Spybot Search and Destroy is our favorite utility. It is frequently updated, detects lots of different malware, and some of the built in utilities just push it over the top for convenience. For example, their startup editor consults a database of programs which actually explains for many programs what they are, what installs them, and if they are a risk. This saves a ton of time researching the items online, not to mention reducing the risk of coming up with the "incorrect answer" online.

As with all protective software, before scanning you should download all available updates. Otherwise, it is likely you will miss more rare or more modern infectious software.
